Celebrity Legacies airs Tonight: Kurt Cobain 20 Years Later

In tonight's premiere of Celebrity Legacies: Kurt Cobain on ReelzChannel, I provide commentary on mental health and family aspects of Cobain's meteoric rise and tragic fall, and the possible impact of his fame and fortune on surviving family members. It's been twenty years since the tragic death of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. Cobain's musical legacy defined a generation and a musical genre. Cobain's fame and fortune did not bring peace or satisfaction to Cobain. His suicide note summarized his life well by quoting Neil Young's lyric...“I don’t have the passion anymore, and so remember, it’s better to burn out than to fade away.” Cobain joined what has been coined "the 27 club": a group of exceptionally brilliant and troubled musicians (Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse) who have died of drugs or other violent means at the tender age of only 27.Julie Hanks on Celebrity LegaciesCobain left behind a legacy of culture-shaping music, a troubled wife, and young daughter. In spite of his meteoric fame and financial success, Cobain did not leave behind a will, leaving Love, who had a public history of drug use and emotional instability, in charge of managing his estate with an estimated worth of over $400 million (source).Tonight's Celebrity Legacies documentary series chronicles Cobain's tumultuous early family life, his rise to world-wide fame as iconic frontman of  the grunge-band Nirvana, the emotional unraveling that lead to his death, and the allocation of his wealth after his death at age 27.I was invited to comment on Cobain's mental health history, impact of early family relationships, and chaotic few years of marriage and parenting. Also explored in this episode is the potential impact of Cobain's life -- his fame, fortune, his death, and his inheritance -- on his daughter, Frances, now in her 20's.Check your local cable TV listing for air dates and times.
