5 Problems and Solutions on How We Teach Modesty: Good Things Utah

I was recently in the Good Things Utah studio sharing five problems with and solutions to the ways that we teach modesty.

Click here to watch the interview.

Five problems with how we teach modesty:

  1. Focusing only on what girls wear

  2. Suggesting that girls are responsible for boys’ thoughts, feelings, and behavior

  3. Objectifying women’s bodies

  4. Encouraging judgment of women’s appearances and righteousness

  5. Shaming females for having a womanly body

Five solutions we could implement:

  1. Teaching a holistic definition of modesty as humility in thoughts, words, behavior, and appearance

  2. Teaching that modesty applies to all genders

  3. Teaching boys that they are responsible for their thoughts, feelings, and behavior

  4. Noticing when you are judging others’ clothing and reflecting inward

  5. Seeing women as multidimensional human beings that are more than an appearance
