Modesty Culture and Sexuality with Dr. Julie Hanks: Ladies Talking Love Podcast

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Ariel, host of the Ladies Talking Love Podcast, about healing from the effects of modesty culture and re-evaluating how we as a society view modesty. The word modesty does not mean what women wear. It has to do with appearance, but also how you treat people. However, in modesty culture it’s defined narrowly as what women wear.

Modesty culture goes along with purity culture. It is controlling women through controlling what they wear, sexualizing them, and making them responsible for men’s thoughts and behaviors. It can create shame about our bodies and contribute to a hyper focus on appearance. It also creates a culture where openly judging what women wear is fair game.
