Your self is the core of who you are. Some people call it the soul or the spirit. Whatever you call it, it consists of the very best parts of you. I have found during my time working with LDS clients that the desire to avoid tension and conflict can sometimes hinder the development of a sense of self.

Signs of a Healthy Self

Here are 10 signs of a healthy self, developed by Dr. Julie Hanks.

  1. I consider the opinions of others but I make the final decision in my life.

  2. I am generally aware of my thoughts, feelings, needs, and wants.

  3. I allow others to think and feel differently than I do.

  4. I have a clear sense of priorities and preferences and can clearly express them.

  5. I accept responsibility for the outcome of my choices.

  6. I enjoy the company of others and I enjoy time alone.

  7. I can empathize with others without taking on their burdens.

  8. I can be flexible when things don’t go as planned.

  9. I can take a stand for myself and others when I see injustice or unkindness.

  10. I feel free to do things that I enjoy, and I feel deserving of self-care.

Tools to Help Develop a Healthy Self

Here are some tools and resources that may help you develop a healthy self.

Self-Compassion Affirmation Cards
You deserve the same compassion and grace that you offer your loved ones. Use these self-compassion affirmations to stop the negative self-talk, forgive yourself, and truly understand that you are worthy love.

Personal Authority Affirmation Cards
Have you been living your life based on other people’s expectations? Whether it’s church, family, friends, or acquaintances, other people place their own expectations on how we should look, feel, dress, and think. These cards will help you claim your agency over your own life’s mission.
