[Video] Why Do I Suddenly Start Crying?

Hi, I am a person who's emotions are always close the surface. That is a problem at my job where at times, I will randomly start crying. When I have too much pressure, I cry. When I feel I’ve failed, I cry. Although my mind can put everything in perspective in a matter of seconds, at times, I am already crying and it is too late. I don't know what to do. I am afraid I am going to lose my job if I don't stop crying in the office.

A: There's nothing wrong with crying and it can be very healthy to be in touch with your emotions. However, you're right to be concerned about your inability to contain the crying to more appropriate times and places. I, too, am a crier, and have learned from experience to use cognitive skills to manage my emotions when they try to surface at inappropriate times.  Watch the video below for my complete response... Take good care of yourself!Julie Hanks, LCSW
